Successful foot peg proof-of-concept for Sondors eBikes

I met Doug at ELV Motors in Sunnyvale CA a couple of months ago after he found us online and emailed me about more info on our bike seats. I went down and visited him at the bike shop, and after talking for an hour, decided to dive head first into creating a foot peg solution for ebikes where the throttle plugs into the rear axle.

We decided to use the Sondors eBike as our base model to prototype with (based on their success on Kickstarter last year). After some testing and some modifications, we were able to successfully install Companion Bike Seat onto a Sondors eBike with a modified peg, specifically for ebikes. Included below are pictures of the bike seat installed on the Sondors, including close-ups of the modified pegs used for the installation.

Now that we've proven out the concept, we're working on scaling out manufacturing for these pegs so that we can start offering them on the website.  We should have ebike pegs available for ebikes with both 12mm and 14mm diameter axles within the next couple of weeks.

eBike peg prototype is finished

The prototype modified peg for ebikes is finished and ready to test out and verify it works. There are two modifications to tour standard bike seat peg with this prototype.

The first is a slot cut out of the side of the peg, to allow the power/throttle wire to feed through and back into the wheel. The second is the hole for the peg was tapped to M12x1.25 (12mm diameter by 1.25 mm thread pitch). This peg can screw directly onto 12mm diameter axles and does not require axle nuts to tighten down onto the frame.

To install this peg, you'll disconnect the power/throttle wire from the axle, unscrew the existing axle nut, then screw on the ebike peg, feed the wire back through the slot in the peg, and connect it back up to the wheel.

I'll provide more pictures of the peg once I've been able to install it on an appropriate ebike and make sure it works. Once it's proven out, I'll make these pegs available on the website!

Foot Peg Solution for eBikes

8/11/2015

eBikes today come in all sorts of different configurations: rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, mid-drive (power is applied to the crank set where the pedals are). For some rear-drive systems, the motor is housed in the center of the rear-wheel, and the throttle and control wire feeds in to the motor through the center-point of the rear-axle on one side. To date this configuration has posed a serious challenge to installing a Companion Bike Seat because this wire gets in the way of properly installing the peg onto that side of the rear axle.

Last week I started working on a potential solution for this eBike setup, and I'm making good progress! Below is a picture of the almost-finished "prototype" peg, with a slot in the side to be able to feed the throttle wire through after installing the peg onto the axle. The only thing left is to get the proper sized tap to thread the holes of the peg so that it screws directly onto the axle (without required axle nuts). Once this is done, I'll be able to do a test-install with this updated peg and see if it works!

Depending on how the test installation goes, I will hopefully be able to offer these "eBike pegs" for purchase on the website very soon!

Companion Cargo Rack

I met a gentleman at Interbike this year who was interested in our bike seat more for the load-bearing capacity than the ability to provide an extra seat for a passenger. He stored the batteries for his ebike in a Topeak bag on an MTX bike rack; the problem was the weight of the batteries would bend the rack after only two or three rides, so he was going through bike racks almost once per month! I knew that our bike seat frame was more than strong enough to support the load of the batteries, but I needed to make some modifications to make it work for him as a cargo rack.

First, I needed to remove the seat cushion and the stash-box from the top of the bike seat frame. Once those were removed, I used a rivet tool to affix the lock directly to the frame (since it feeds through the stash-box for our bike seats).

Next steps were to figure out a way to securely mount his existing Topeak bag to the top of the bike seat frame (aka. Companion Cargo Rack). I decided to make a custom base-plate for the bag that would fasten to the cargo rack, locking in place using the existing lock. After putting together some design sketches, I picked up some supplies at the local hardware store and voila! I had a base plate that locked in place using the existing lock, and was more than strong enough to carry the load of the frame.

He ultimately ordered four Companion Cargo Racks and wanted a second cargo back base plate made since he has two ebikes that were both having the same problems with the Topeak racks. So I made the modifications to a couple more bike seats and his cargo racks were just about ready. The final step - installing the rack onto his ebike.

I had to come up with a modified seat-post mount, since his seat had two seat posts rather than one. But taking advantage of most of the existing components, I was able to come up with a solution that worked great!

All in all it was a really fun project. I got to take apart our bike seats and become intimately familiar with the assembly of the bike seats (which I probably should have done years ago).
And the best part is, we have the makings of a new product line for Companion Bike Seats now: the Companion Cargo Rack! Being that our frames were load-tested at over 4,000 lbs, this is the beefiest bike rack on the market! Stay tuned for more on when we release our new cargo racks!

Check out this "electrified" bike that one of our customers in France customized using his Companion Bike Seat! His ebike uses the new Bosch eBike system, and he was able to store all the batteries and electronics inside the stash-box.

We can't wait to see what other cool ways people decide to use their Companion Bike Seat!

Here's what he said about his new setup:

"The Bikeseat has proven to be an excellent kit to electrify a bicycle. I used it on an electric Bosch bike and was able to put 600WH of batteries inside + all the electronics. It is a clean kit that can literally be mounted to any bike, all you need to add to the bike is the motor and the throttle and anyone is good to go!"
