Bicycle Commuting

Commuting by bicycle is one the greatest options modern civilization has to solving mass-transit commute problems in major cities. The modern bicycle – invented almost 20 years before the automobile – is ultimately the very invention that will save us from all the problems that car-commuting has created in congested cities globally. Bike commuting provides a wealth of benefits to cities, including drastic reductions in traffic, pollution, and healthcare-costs, not to mention the intangible benefits associated with a happier, healthier society. Commuting by bicycle is growing in popularity, both in the US and abroad, spurred on by the explosion of bike-share programs in cities all around the globe over the last 5 years. But bike commuting still has a long way to go before it becomes a meaningful and regular aspect of today’s global society.

Integrating bicycles into the broader conversation of mass transportation is the epitome of an efficient and truly modern mass transit system for the modern city. Electric trains to get in and out of the greater metro and suburban areas, and bicycles (and walking) as the primary mode to get to and from train stops. This is how we ultimately support societies with populations as dense as they are today in most cities. Bicycling is the final piece to the puzzle, and it still hasn’t caught on yet.

Commuting by bicycle still hasn’t quite taken off here in the US en masse, though there are a handful of cities that have seen a recent explosion in bike commuting and investment in bicycle infrastructure: Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, and New York City to name a few.

Now let’s jump over to Europe, and the first country that comes to mind is Holland. In the Netherlands, commuting by bicycle is the norm – it’s a model that cities globally should try to emulate. The same is true throughout Asia (let’s not forget the idea for Companion Bike Seat was originally conceived in Thailand). The growth of bike share programs has certainly helped reinvigorate the use of bicycles in cities, both in the US and abroad.

There are huge benefits to people and to the cities they inhabit as the frequency of bike commuting increases. Regular exercise as part of the daily commute, traffic reduction, pollution reduction, and reduction in health-care costs to individuals and local governments based on healthier happier people.

We believe Companion Bike Seat can help make bicycle commuting further accessible to folks by turning virtually any bicycle into a two-seater with room for a second passenger. Add in the waterproof stash-box and it’s got all the same features – miniaturized of course – as a smart car: room for one passenger and a small storage compartment as well.
